DIY beeswax cloth - sustainable gift idea

Gifts are simply part of Christmas - they make every heart happy, are a lovely gesture to simply say "thank you" and make the Christmas season so special. How about giving something homemade and super sustainable this year? Just the preparation, designing and finally wrapping - that is pure joy! If you want to give a sustainable gift, this super easy DIY idea is just right for you: a homemade beeswax cloth .

Sustainable gift idea: DIY beeswax cloths

You can do pretty much anything and store anything with our Ball Mason jars - but for some things, even the largest 2 L Mason jar is too small, such as for bread or a sandwich to go. Here is a great solution that is sustainable and so pretty. If we now suggest giving you a sustainable cling film/aluminium foil as a gift - how would that sound? Yes, not a classic gift idea - but have you ever thought about how much cling film, aluminium foil, paper bags etc. we sometimes use at home (if it doesn't fit in the Mason Jar - of course :))? The huge consumption of cling film etc. for covering small bowls, fruit, bread etc. can be easily reduced. There is a really great alternative to this - you just have to know about it: beeswax cloths !

Let’s give something sustainable this Christmas!

You can make a beeswax cloth flexible using the warmth of your hands - it will then cling wonderfully to bread, fruit or a bowl. You can simply wash the beeswax cloth and reuse it . The beeswax has an antibacterial effect - so your food will stay fresh for a long time. And isn't the material really sweet? With little llamas - fits perfectly in the kitchen, right? :) You can now let the recipient do the work themselves or give your finished beeswax cloths directly in a glass jar . Let's get started:

Homemade beeswax cloths

What you need: And here's how it works: Cut the cotton fabric into pieces of different sizes - the following sizes are suitable:
  • 15 x 15 cm
  • 20 x 20 cm
  • 20 x 35 m
You can basically use any fabric you want - it just has to be cotton. Now place a large piece of baking paper on the ironing board (or table with a fabric as a base). Place a piece of fabric on the baking paper and sprinkle a few beeswax drops on the fabric. How much exactly - you can do that by feel. About as much as in the following photo on the left: Now place a second piece of baking paper on the fabric with the beeswax drops. We now heat the drops with the iron - they become liquid and you can spread them out well with the iron. This takes about 30 seconds until everything is liquid and distributed. If you like, you can now turn the fabric over briefly - and go over it again with the iron. But this is not necessary. Now hang the beeswax cloth on a clothespin and let it dry briefly - this doesn't take long. The cloth now feels a bit "waxy" and rough - perfect! Now put the finished cloth in the glass, tie a bow around it and you're done! 2 gifts in one! Guaranteed to be an unusual gift idea - but very useful and sustainable! By the way: with the remaining beeswax you can make wonderful candles in a glass as we show you here or make your own cosmetics.
